In yet another jolt for autonomous / connected cars, a team of researchers demonstrated a major hackable flaw– in the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus standard – that could enable a Denial of Service (DoS) attack on safety systems including brakes, airbags and power steering. With CAN essentially being the heart of the system, it undeniably pulls all of the major strings. It handles a vehicle’s internal communication system which according to researchers, “is driven by as much as 100,000,000 lines of code”.
Recent reports suggest that, this flaw which applies to virtually every modern car, is unfixable. Fixing this problem would mean, changing the entire model of how CAN standard works at its lowest levels. This means that the entire line of code must be rewritten from scratch. Inorder to achieve this, a paradigm shift in terms of vehicle cybersecurity must happen.
